California has one of the must underrated and easily assessable fisheries along all of one side, the surf! And San Diego has some of the best surf fishing available! Our beaches are set up for multiple approaches to fly fishing and that part of what makes it so good. From sight fishing corbina in inches of water with realistic sand crab flies to throwing large baitfish flies over deep troughs for halibut and big female perch. The surf truly is an untapped resource when it comes to the fly fishing world. But for all the fun it can produce the surf is also on of the most technical fisheries we have here in SoCal. Fishing the appropriate structure can result in a day with non stop action, while fishing 30 yards up the beach may result in nothing. Knowing the structure of the surf and how to read it is key in this fishery and that’s where out guides come into play. We will show you what to look for and what to target as you walk the beautiful San Diego shoreline that stretches nearly 100 miles.

The different ways to approach this fishery is what makes it one of our favorites. The surf has a variety of species that can be targeted; while blind casting, dredging the rips and holes can produce perch, halibut, yellowfin croaker, spotfin croaker, corbina and even the rare striper. Or fisherman can walk the sandy beach without even getting their feet wet in search of the thrilling shallow water corbina bite. This approach will test you vision, your casting, and your patience as you hunt for these “ghosts of the coast”. During this time corbina put their lives on the line as they push up into the shallowest of water to look for their favorite foods. Fly anglers looking to put their skills to the test often become enthralled with the corbina and I personally know quite a few fisherman who have put all other fish to the side as they hunt these elusive fish.
